Great escapes

The Project Brief

The brief was to make a response to the great escapes exhibition at the national archives. This was an exhibition about prisoners of war during World War II. We had to use a variety of media to explore creative image making.

The Process

I knew I wanted to respond in an illustrative way so I experimented with mixed media to create a series of images which I then turned into a mock up for a book. I used gouache, coloured pencil, tissue paper and washi tape to create dimension and texture in the pieces.

The End Result

My final outcome was a book mockup that explored creative image making with different media and responded to the exhibition as I drew upon specific stories of prisoners of war, for example the women’s choir that was created as a metaphorical escape for those imprisoned.
