The Project Brief
Glyndebourne. 2016
Assistant Prop Maker
The Process
I spent a month in the summer of 2016 on work experience at Glyndebourne opera house in their prop department. I worked with a small team of six to the brief the Set Designer has set.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream was a repeated opera at Glyndebourne so much of the original set and props were in storage, although they needed considerable up-cycling and repair work to restore them. I was assigned jobs from the Head Prop Maker and involved myself in create processes I had not been exposed to previously such as using silicone moulds. It was really exciting to try out new processes and experiment with them to achieve the desired effect. I worked effectively by myself and with the wider team on a range of restorations, the biggest being the restoration of the giant tree props which was the backdrop for many of the scenes.
The End Result
The performance was a huge success at Glyndebourne’s summer festival. I learnt a lot of new design skills and developed some existing ones too.
